What a difference a lip makes! A banging statement lip will have you feeling fierce with minimal effort.
Let me just get one thing straight: A statement lip doesn’t have to be a red lip. There’s so many shades to choose from it’s a good idea to experiment with blue and orange based hues to see what suits you better!
Choosing your perfect lip colour
There’s actually no hard and fast rule on what colours you should and shouldn’t wear, however a good rule of thumb is to choose colours that compliment your skin tone. As bustle.com explains, “You want to focus on shades similar to your undertone when choosing a lipstick. For yellow undertones, stick to warmer colors and for pink undertones, look for shades with blue or purple tones in them.“
I love shades with a cooler or (blue undertone) to make my teeth look whiter and complement darker skin, whilst warm shades (orange undertone) make blue eyes pop and give skin a honeyed quality.
If bright lips are a little too daring for you, try gently blotting a small amount onto your lips and top with crystal gloss to give a slick of colour that will add some colour, without the attitude! For the brave at heart, I recommend a matching liner to give you a precision Matt finish (yes, Matt lips ARE always in).
HOW TO DO IT
Precision is key with this look and it’s crucial that your lips are moisturized before you apply any bold colours. There’s nothing more unsightly than cracked lips, especially when they are on show! To ensure your lippie stands the test of time, let your balm absorb whilst you apply your base makeup and then remove any excess before you start your lips. This will ensure that your lip liner fixes and you have a lasting look.
- Fill in the bow and line of your lips with Lip Liner - you can use a 'join-the-dot’ method to get the perfect line if you are not confident with lining the full lip in one go!
- Fill your lips with pencil (this will ensure that if the lipstick wears away you are left with colour underneath)
- With a lip brush, fill in the lips with lipstick or stain.
- Blot with tissue and reapply lipstick
- Clean up and define the line with pencil again
- Et voila! Perfect statment lip!
REMEMBER :: This look works best when the rest of your face is natural and minimal so go slowly and precisely - choose nude eyes, barely there cheeks and a dusting of colour rather than a heavy blush.

Last words of wisdom
Keep your look balanced: bright lips = neutral eyes, bright eyes = neutral lips. Stick to this rule and your look will be polished to perfection. Whichever you choose, remember that the golden rule of statement lip perfection is maintenance – for maximum hold you should layer your product, blot off excess, dust with a little powder and reapply.
Choose a lip product that goes the distance and leaves a clean stain as it wears. The trick is to try before you buy and work it!
